Immuno-compromised: what does it mean?

While most people now think and act as if the Covid pandemic is over, it is not the case for at least 500,000 people in the UK. This cohort, of all ages, suffers from and manages a variety of serious health conditions. Cancer, transplants, lupus and primary immune deficiencies are just a few examples, but what they all have in common is the fact that, despite vaccinations and boosters, these patients are likely to have reduced or no protection from Covid. In the case of things like cancer it will be because a side effect of their essential medication is suppression of the immune system; whereas those with primary immune deficiencies have a genetically-based malfunctioning or incomplete immune system.  And it's not just Covid - for those who are immuno-suppressed any infection, even the common cold can make them seriously ill, and at risk of hospitalisation.
